Counseling became a second career for Kathy Penn after she received her degree from Bethel University in 2018 and subsequently earned her LPCC licensure. Kathy is passionate about utilizing the insights she has gained to help clients alleviate their distress and enhance their quality of life.
Life can be challenging. We can feel stuck and wonder if things can ever be different. Sharing our experience with a therapist who offers acceptance and understanding can be instrumental in finding a pathway forward toward positive change. There are many good counselors and counseling approaches, and it’s important to find a good fit. Here is a summary of the approaches Kathy prefers to use:
Kathy values the Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach for its ability to help clients recognize internal parts as sources of the oftentimes conflicting thoughts, feelings and behaviors they experience. This is common to every person. For instance, one internal part may want to meet with a counselor, while another part resists. IFS fosters recognition, understanding, and appreciation of all parts while encouraging clients to live from their authentic Self; the person they were created to be.
Interpersonal Neurobiology is another area Kathy finds valuable. This field focuses on ways the brain and mind function to support personal stability and healthy relationships. Human brains are capable to change in ways that support stability and well-being.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has identified the dynamics of psychological flexibility that are crucial for overall well-being. ACT helps to identify areas where personal growth will be beneficial.
Kathy has a special appreciation for the Immanuel Approach as effective for processing distress and trauma. This approach encourages relationship with God as a primary source of safety and stability. The Immanuel Approach is especially well suited for clients who hold a Christian worldview and whose faith is an important part of their journey.
Kathy’s availability in the Twin Cities Metro area is limited. However, she also meets with clients in northern Minnesota, including Virginia, Eveleth, and surrounding Iron Range communities. Interested individuals are encouraged to call ACS for inquiries.
